The Emboss Filter

Honestly, the Emboss filter doesn't do much for most photos. It turns an image into a bas-relief, although not as well as the Bas Relief filter does. In the process, the Emboss filter converts the image to medium gray. Photoshop also has a layer effect called Emboss, which seems to be a lot more flexible, but it is also more complicated to use. The Emboss filter has only three options Shadow Angle, Height, and Amount. Figure 17.21 shows a piece of embossed type, first embossed with the filter...

Find Edges, Glowing Edges, and Trace Contour

These three effects sound as if they should look alike. They actually do look somewhat alike, with Glowing Edges and Find Edges being much more dramatic than Trace Contour. The Find Edges filter removes most of the colors from the object and replaces them with lines around every edge contour. The color of the lines depends on the value at that point on the original object, with lightest points in yellow, scaling through to the darkest points, which appear in purple. When developing, black-and-white film is moved from a warm developer to a significantly cooler solution, the soft gelatin warps...

The Shadowland/lightroom Development Story

The development of Adobe Lightroom, code named Shadowland, was not something Adobe started after Apple announced Aperture. The Shadowland project has been going on for years. How do I know that Adobe has been working on Shadowland for so long Because that's how long I've been working on it. Back in October of 2002 Mark Hamburg sent me a little developmental application he called PixelToy (breaking his own rule, there was an innercap) and jokingly refered to as SchewePaint .

Optimizing images using Photoshop or Image Ready

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe ImageReady give you an effective range of controls for compressing the file size of an image while optimizing its on-screen display quality. Compression options vary according to the file format used to save the image. The JPEG format is designed to preserve the broad color range and subtle brightness variations of continuous-tone images (such as photographs or images with gradients). This format can represent images using millions of colors. The GIF format is...

Automating a multi-step task

An action is a set of one or more commands that you record and can play back to apply that series of commands to a single file or a batch of files. In this section of the lesson, you'll see how the Actions palette can help you save time by applying a multi-step process to the four images you'll use in this project. Using actions is one of several ways that you can automate tasks in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe ImageReady. To learn more about recording actions, see Photoshop 7.0 online Help.

Slicing an image in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop lets you define slices using the slice tool or by converting layers into slices. You'll begin the lesson by slicing parts of a banner image for buttons using the slice tool in Photoshop. You'll name the slices and link them to URL addresses, and then optimize the slices. Then you'll continue slicing the banner image in ImageReady and create rollovers for the button slices. About designing Web pages with Photoshop and ImageReady When designing Web pages using Adobe Photoshop and...

12 Creating Special Effects

The huge assortment of filters available for Adobe Photoshop lets you transform ordinary images into extraordinary digital artwork. You can select filters that simulate a traditional artistic medium a watercolor, pastel, or sketched effect or you can choose from filters that blur, bend, wrap, sharpen, or fragment images. In addition to using filters to alter images, you can use adjustment layers and painting modes to vary the look of your artwork. In this lesson, you'll learn how to do the...

How the quick mask mode works

Typically, you'll at least want to rough out a selection with the standard selection tools before entering the quick mask mode. Then you can concentrate on refining and modifying your selection inside the quick mask, rather than having to create the selection from scratch. (Naturally, this is only a rule of thumb. I violate the rule several times throughout this chapter, but only because the quick mask mode and I are such tight friends.) To enter the quick mask mode, click the quick mask mode...

New Features of Adobe Illustrator CC/17.1. Live Corners

Today we begin a series of articles devoted to new features of Adobe Illustrator CC 17.1, which to my point of view are long-expected and more useful than the features of the previous, 17.0, release. Let's take a closer look at these features - on the stage of Live Corners. Finally we have the opportunity to round corners of vector objects with the help of the standard functions.

How to create hexagonal grids for making patterns in Illustrator

Final Image Preview In this tutorial we will take a look at several ways to create grids, including hexagonal grids, which will be a basis for seamless geometric patterns. Such types of patterns are relatively easy to create they remain, however, in demand in different design spheres, such as print design, textile design and web design.

Stepping Back through Time

Since roughly the dawn of recorded time, folks begged, pleaded, and screamed at the top of their lungs for multiple undos in Photoshop. But it wasn't until Photoshop 5 that Adobe delivered what the masses craved. The payoff for the long wait was huge Version 5 offered up the History palette, which provides the best implementation of multiple undos I've ever seen. Moving beyond simple backstepping, the History palette takes the whole reversion metaphor into Slaughterhouse Five territory. If...

Other Ways to Use Blending Modes

Ihile we tend to think of blending modes in terms of the pull-down options in the Layers palette, they also come into play in other areas of the application. Several of the brush tools support a choice of blending modes, as do layer styles and certain commands under the Image and Edit menus. The projects in this book concentrate on the blending mode options in the Layers palette, but we will explore these other possibilities from time to time, and they may be invaluable to your own adjustments...

How to Use Blending Modes

'm a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, and each of the blending modes has its own shortcut letter. Let's say you want to switch a layer to use the Linear Light blending mode. You could select it from the drop-down box at the top of the Layers palette. However, you may find it faster to use the keyboard shortcut if you're using a Windows PC, hold down the Alt and Shift keys, and then hit the letter J on a Mac, use Option, Shift, and J. In this book, I'll write shortcuts as Alt Opt-Shift-, with the...

LIn the Layers palette, duplicate the original image layer by dragging the background layer onto the Create a new layer icon, or use Ctrl Cmd-J 2 Using either the pulldown blending mode menu in the Layers palette or the shortcut Alt Opt-Shift-L, change the duplicate layer's blending mode to Color and rename it Color. 3 Zoom in to ioo using View gt Actual Pixels or Ctrl Cmd-Alt Option-Zero and move around the screen to an area where the digital noise is clearly visible 4 Apply some Gaussian Blur...

Non-Layer Blending Modes

Windows Alt+Shift+Q Mac Option+Shift+Q Windows Alt+Shift+R Mac Option+Shift+R hile this book is primarily about Layer blending modes, Photoshop also has some blending modes that don't apply to layers but that are applied with painting tools, the Edit Fill, Edit Stroke commands, or via other specific dialog boxes. It may be that you never use these non-layer blending modes, particularly if you use Photoshop as an image-editing tool. However, for those of you who undertake a lot of painting work...

Indexed Color mode

When converting to indexed color, Photoshop builds a color lookup table (CLUT), which stores and indexes the colors in the image. If a color in the original image does not appear in the table, the program chooses the closest one or simulates the color using available colors. By limiting the palette of colors, indexed color can reduce file size while maintaining visual quality for example, for a multimedia animation application or a Web page.

Editing a quick mask

Next, you will refine the selection of the egret by adding to or erasing parts of the masked area. You'll use the brush tool to make changes to your quick mask. The advantage of editing your selection as a mask is that you can use almost any tool or filter to modify the mask. (You can even use selection tools.) In Quick Mask mode, you do all of your editing in the image window. In Quick Mask mode, Photoshop automatically defaults to Grayscale mode.

To select a color range using preset colors:

1 Choose Select Color Range. 2 For Select, choose a color or tonal range. The Out-of-Gamut option works only on RGB and Lab images. (An out-of-gamut color is an RGB or Lab color that cannot be printed using process color printing. See Color gamuts (Photoshop) on page 91.) 3 Click Selection to display the selected areas in the preview area. 4 To preview the selection in the image window, choose an option for Selection Preview None to display no preview in the image window.

Use the History Brushes to Combine Creative Effects

Sometimes when I'm working in Photoshop, I like the way an applied effect looks on one part of the image but not on the rest. When this happens, it can be difficult to retain the effect in only one area without compromising the rest of the image. However, it doesn't have to be difficult if you use the history brushes. Consider the image shown in Figures 8-26 and 8-27. Figure 8-26 shows an untouched photo I wanted to use as a background for advertising a theme dinner. To give the photo a more...

The Toolbox

The toolbox, like an artist's work table or paintbox, holds all the tools you'll use to draw, paint, erase, and otherwise work on your picture. If you've used a previous edition of Photoshop, you might be in for a few surprises. Some of the tools have changed locations and gained new capabilities, and there are some very nifty new ones. There are four categories of tools in Photoshop's toolbox Let's take a quick look at these tools. (We'll talk about them in detail later.) Figure 1.4 shows the...

To Make Repairs

In this lesson, you'll use the Clone Stamp Tool to sample an undamaged portion of an image and use it to cover up a flaw on the image. Let's face it, many of the images you'll want to work with will have a visual flaw of some kind, such as a scratch, or an object obscuring what would otherwise be a great shot. While you cannot go back in time and move something out of the way, you can often use the Clone Stamp Tool to remove an object or cover up a flaw. The Clone Stamp Tool can copy a sample...

Selecting tools in the toolbox

The toolbox contains selection tools, painting and editing tools, foreground- and background-color selection boxes, and viewing tools. This section introduces the toolbox and shows you how to select tools. As you work through the lessons, you'll learn more about each tool's specific function. 1 To select a tool, click the tool in the toolbox, or you can press the tool's keyboard shortcut. For example, to use the keyboard shortcut to select the zoom tool, press Z. Then, you can press M to switch...

Pressure-sensitive options

As I mentioned a few pages ago, you control Photoshop's reaction to stylus pressure using the options in the Brush Dynamics drop-down palette. When you select Stylus from any of the palette pop-up menus, the program responds to changes in stylus pressure by varying your paint or edit strokes as follows Size Select Stylus from the Size pop-up menu, as shown in Figure 5-33, if you want Photoshop to change the thickness of the line according to stylus pressure. The more pressure you apply, the...

Working Efficiently With Keyboard Shortcuts

Photoshop was developed from the ground up to be used with two hands one on the keyboard and one on the mouse. The time you save by using keyboard equivalents to access a tool or command, and to navigate through a file will make you a more efficient retoucher. Additionally, using the keyboard rather than the mouse reduces the total number of repetitive mouse clicks that can add up to the pain, aggravation, and lost productivity of repetitive-motion injury. Knowing the keyboard shortcuts to...

Painting with a state or snapshot of an image (Photoshop)

The history brush tool lets you paint a copy of one state or snapshot of an image into the current image window. This tool makes a copy, or sample, of the image and then paints with it. For example, you might make a snapshot of a change you made with a painting tool or filter. After undoing the change to the image, you could use the history brush tool to apply the change selectively to areas of the image. Unless you select a merged snapshot, the history brush tool paints from a layer in the...

Fading the paint (and other effects)

Pen Fade Brush Photoshop

In earlier versions of Photoshop, you could create a fading paint stroke by selecting the Fade check box in the Options palette and then specifying whether you wanted the stroke to fade from the foreground color to the background color or to transparency. In Version 6, you have the same choices, but they're handled a little differently. When you work with the paintbrush or pencil, setting the Color option in the Brush Dynamics palette to Fade enables you to paint a line that fades from the...

Step 9: Using The History Brush Tool

To add some color back into the image, we are going to use the History Brush to paint the ornament back into the image by using the rich colors snapshot. Not only does this add some color, it eliminates all the grain that was put into the ornament when we blended layers. To select the rich colors snapshot for painting purposes, click in the snapshot activation box next to the snapshot at the top of the History box, as shown in Figure 4.16. Clicking this box sets the history state as the source...
